02 July 2008

Portree based Fèisean nan Gàidheal is to benefit from an additional £25,000 from the Scottish Government to take its drama group, Meanbh-chuileag, to schools around the country.

Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe External Affairs and Culture will announce the funding boost on a visit on Thursday (3 July) to the organisation’s offices in Portree. The funding will assist the work of the drama group in introducing Gaelic language and culture to schools throughout Scotland.

Commenting on the funding, Ms Fabiani – who is visiting Skye as part of her ministerial summer tour of the Hebrides – said:

“I am very pleased to support the ongoing work of Meanbh-chuileag. This drama group brings our cultural heritage to life for both Gaelic and non-Gaelic speakers in schools around the country.  I am confident that this further funding will spark an appreciation of our Gaelic culture and encourage young people to celebrate both the traditional and contemporary forms it takes.’’

Meanbh-chuileag (touring schools drama group) visits Gaelic units in schools and has toured across Scotland introducing Gaelic to schools in Orkney, the Borders, Aberdeenshire and Angus.

During her two day tour of Skye (2- 4 July) Ms Fabiani will also attend the launch of the business plan for Faclair na Gàidhlig – the project to produce a Gaelic dictionary - at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI in Sleat on Thursday, as well as meeting with a group of parents in Portree to hear of their plans to strengthen Gaelic education in the area.

Fèisean nan Gàidheal is a company limited by guarantee, and a registered charity, no. SC 130071.
