Youth Music Initiative
Since 2004, Fèis Rois has been responsible for delivering traditional arts classes on behalf of Highland Council and Feisean nan Gaidheal as part of the Scottish Arts Council’s Youth Music Initiative.
Feis Rois delivers tuition classes to 104 schools in Ross-shire, Caithness, Inverness and Nairn throughout the school year. Each school receives three 4-week blocks in each of Tin Whistle, Group playing, Gaelic Song and Childrens’ song. Since September 2006 over 3,700 children have received visits from our teams of tutors.
This Highland Council YMI programme has been received with overwhelming enthusiasm from teachers and pupils and we are constantly delighted with the pupils’ response and progress often resulting in concert items and recordings which help the pupils to remember songs and tunes and continue learning.
Good to have two young enthusiastic musicians. They were inspirational and had great class control throughout all the classes. We thoroughly enjoyed the Initiative and think it is very worthwhile.
Dates for the YMI project in 2008:
8th April to 2nd May Ross-shire and Caithness
12th May - 6th June Inverness
