Traditional Musicians in Schools Scheme
Since 2001 Fèis Rois has co-ordinated the Scottish Arts Council Traditional Musicians in Schools scheme. Teams of traditional musicians, singers and dancers have delivered workshops to primary schools from Thurso to the Scottish Borders and from the Western Isles to Aberdeen. In 2006 alone, 209 classes took place in 197 schools with 11,725 children.
We have been overwhelmed by the tremendous response the project has received from school staff and pupils:
This project increased the pupils’ awareness of traditional music and instruments. It gave them the opportunity to listen to and join in with Scottish music. It was fun, participative and exciting!
2008 sees the project move into a new phase where as a direct result of demand from schools we aim to develop our TMIS scheme to offer a range of exciting new workshops and opportunities aimed at enhancing children's musical education. We are currently working to extend our tuition programme to a number of areas across Scotland. For further information contact Allison Watson, Fèis Rois Education Officer
